Take a test payment

A test payment works like a real one, but uses a test card, so no money moves. It’s the quickest way to see a payment, its fee and a refund.

Who can do this: You need to be an owner, admin, manager or developer to do this.

  1. Make sure you’re in test mode: the banner at the top says Test mode. No real money moves.
  2. Choose Payments in the sidebar, then New test payment. (On Home, the Get started checklist’s Take a payment does the same.)
  3. Enter an Amount, such as 12.50, and a Description if you like.
  4. Under Test card, choose what should happen, such as a card that succeeds, or Declined: insufficient funds.
  5. Choose Take payment. The payment’s page opens.
  • What you keep shows the Amount, the Tuppence fee and the Net you keep, and how the fee was worked out. The card names in the list show which extras apply, such as American Express or a card from abroad.
  • Refund gives some or all of it back. See Refund a payment.
  • A declined card shows Declined and the reason the bank gave.
Choose To see
A card that succeeds A normal payment. Its money stays pending for a few days, like a real one.
…money available at once A payment you can pay out straight away.
Declined: insufficient funds or Declined: generic A declined payment.
Disputed: succeeds, then the bank takes it back A dispute. See Simulate a dispute.
