Coupons and promo codes

A coupon is a discount on a subscription’s charges. A promo code is a word a customer types to get a coupon, such as SPRING.

Coupons and promo codes are set up through your integration. There’s no screen for them in the dashboard yet. Your developer can follow coupons and promo codes in the developer docs.

  • It takes off a percentage or a fixed amount.
  • It lasts for one charge, for a set number of charges, or for ever.
  • Like a plan’s price, its terms can’t change once it’s made.
  • A percentage is rounded down, so a coupon never gives more than it says.
  • If the discount would leave less than the smallest possible card payment, that charge is free instead.

The discount shows as a separate line on each invoice.

  • It isn’t case-sensitive.
  • It can have its own limits: how many times it can be used, an expiry date, and whether it’s only for customers who have never subscribed with you.
  • Limits are checked as the subscription starts, so the last use goes to exactly one customer.

Archiving a coupon or switching off a promo code stops anyone new using it. Subscriptions that already have the discount keep it.
