How subscriptions work
A subscription charges a customer’s saved card on a repeating schedule set by their plan. You set it up once, and Tuppence takes each payment when it’s due.
The pieces
Section titled “The pieces”- A plan is what you sell on repeat: a name, a price, and how often it repeats (every week, month or year). It can include a free trial.
- A subscription puts one customer on one plan. It charges the card the customer has saved with you.
- An invoice records every charge for you and your customer.
Subscriptions and plans are on the Subscriptions page of the dashboard, subscriptions at the top and plans underneath.
What the status means
Section titled “What the status means”| Status | What’s happening |
|---|---|
| Active | The customer is paid up. Next charge shows when the card is next charged. |
| On trial | The customer is in a free trial. Nothing is charged until it ends. |
| Payment failed | The last charge failed. Tuppence tries again and tells your customer. See When a subscription payment fails. |
| Canceled | It has ended. Nothing more is charged. |
If a subscription is set to end, Next charge shows Ends and the date.
A plan’s price never changes
Section titled “A plan’s price never changes”Once you’ve made a plan, you can’t change its price or how often it repeats. To charge a different price, make a new plan and move customers to it. This way, a subscription always shows the price the customer agreed to.
Ways to start one
Section titled “Ways to start one”- From the dashboard, for a customer who has already saved a card. See Start a subscription.
- With a payment link that starts a subscription when it’s paid. See Sell a subscription with a payment link.
- From your own website or app, through your developer’s integration.
