A dedicated till
A dedicated till is a shared counter tablet that opens on the till, shows only the till, and is never one tap from your payouts or cards. Staff unlock it with their till PIN. Only the person signed in to Tuppence on it can leave.
| A dedicated till | Any other device | |
|---|---|---|
| When the app opens | Straight into the till | Home; the Till tab opens the till |
| Coming back from the background | Back to the till | Where it was |
| The till’s menu | Leave the till, with Face ID | Back to the app, one tap |
| The app lock | Off (the till’s PIN pad is the lock) | Face ID, as everywhere else |
| Notifications for the business | None | As you set them |
Either way the till is full screen, with no tab bar under the grid. The shift and cash-up, held orders and switching who is selling are in the menu at the top left.
1. Make a tablet a dedicated till
Section titled “1. Make a tablet a dedicated till”- In the dashboard, open Registers → Devices → Pair a device, choose the register and show a code. (If you are signed in to the app as an owner, admin or manager, you can skip the code and pick the register.)
- On the tablet, open the app’s Till tab, type the code, and leave Use this device only as a till on. It is on by default on a tablet and off on a phone.
- The till opens. Staff sign in with their till PIN.
To change it later, tick or untick Dedicated till beside the device on Devices. The device picks up the change within a minute. You can also rename a device there.
2. Lock the tablet to Tuppence
Section titled “2. Lock the tablet to Tuppence”A dedicated till keeps people inside Tuppence but cannot block the home gesture or the app switcher. Your tablet’s own setting can.
| iPad: Guided Access | Android: screen pinning | |
|---|---|---|
| Turn on | Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access; set a passcode under Passcode Settings only managers know | Settings → Security (or Security & privacy → More security settings) → App pinning, with Ask for PIN before unpinning |
| Start | Open Tuppence, triple-click the top (or home) button, tap Start | Open Tuppence, open Recents, tap the app’s icon, choose Pin |
| End | Triple-click again and enter that passcode | Hold Back and Recents together, enter the tablet’s PIN |
For a fleet, a device-management service can keep tablets in Tuppence permanently (Android’s lock task mode, Apple’s Single App Mode).
Leaving the till
Section titled “Leaving the till”| Who | What happens |
|---|---|
| The person signed in to Tuppence on the device | Leave the till asks for their Face ID (or fingerprint). The tablet’s passcode is not enough, because staff often know it |
| Anyone else, or no Face ID set up | Sign out and leave signs the app out. Only a password signs back in |
| Nobody signed in to the app | Leaving goes to the sign-in screen |
| Staff with a till PIN | Can’t leave. A PIN unlocks the till, not the business behind it |
Through the API
Section titled “Through the API”| Call | |
|---|---|
POST /public/pos/pair | The app pairs with dedicated (default false) |
POST /v1/pos_devices/{id} | Change dedicated or name. Needs an owner, admin or manager, or a secret key. A revoked device can’t be changed: pair it again |
GET /v1/pos_devices/me | The device reads both back, as it also does from its heartbeat |
- A customer display: a second screen facing the customer.
